Is George Michael Jewish ?

Just in case you wonder if George Michael is Jewish, the truth is that Michael is barely Jewish.

In detail, Michael was born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in East Finchley, North London. His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, a Greek Cypriot restaurateur, moved to the United Kingdom in the 1950s and changed his name to Jack Panos.

Michael's mother, Lesley Angold, was an English dancer who passed away from cancer in Fulham. His maternal grandmother was Jewish but wed a Gentile and raised her children with no knowledge of their Semitic heritage. This was during World War II, and "she thought if they didn't know that their mother was Jewish, they wouldn't be at risk," Michael stated. His mother was sent to convent school, effectively obliterating any traces of his grandmother's faith. Michael spent the majority of his childhood in Kingsbury, North West London, in the home his parents bought soon after his birth.

According to Jewish law, Jewishness is passed down through maternal lineage. So, considering the fact that his mother was Jewish, Michael is Jewish.

We have to say though that George Michael hasn't converted to Judaism and never practiced the religion. Also, once he and his family got to England they converted to the Church of England.

Conclusion: George Michael is barely Jewish.
