David Duchovny Addiction

It's not easy to recover from any kind of addiction, but for American actor, writer and director David Duchovny, best known for portraying Fox Mulder on "The X-Files" and Hank Moody on "Californication", the road to recovery has been pretty hard.

It has to be noted that there were many rumors about Duchovny cheating on his wife Tea Leoni, with reports claiming that the actor cheated Tea for years because he suffered from sex addiction!

In 2008, Duchovny, now 52, voluntarily checked himself into a sex rehab program - The Meadows facility in Arizona where he completed a 35 day course - after heartbroken Leoni found out his indiscretions and threatened to divorce him.

An insider revealed to the National Enquirer: "He said Tea gave him an ultimatum: Get treatment or our marriage is over. She felt it was ruining their marriage and affecting their kids."

The couple have been married for 11 years and they have a daughter, Madelaine West, fourteen, and an eleven-year-old son, Kyd.

According to the source, Duchovny admitted he can't resist the temptation of women who offer themselves to him.

During his stay at The Meadows facility to battle his sex addiction, Duchovny's wife visited him several times.

"Tea drove to The Meadows every day during the four days she was in town," the source told the National Enquirer.

In a statement, before his admittance Duchovny was quoted as saying: "I have voluntarily entered a facility for the treatment of sex addiction. I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny was the first celebrity to confess his sex addiction. But he was not always candid to admit he had a huge problem. In an interview with Playgirl in 1997, Duchovny told the magazine: "I'm not a sex addict…I have never been to those meetings. It's hurtful to my family and if I was involved with a woman in a monogamous relationship, it would be hurtful to her."

Duchovny and wife Tea Leoni went their separate ways for the second time in June 2011, after 14 years of marriage. Rumors that they quietly divorced emerged in 2012, though it has yet to be confirmed. It's unclear though what specifically caused the breakup between them this time as things appeared fine (they were seen arm-in-arm at a film festival in New York City.)

It is believed that Duchovny's alter-ego as the oversexed writer Hank Moody on Showtime's "Californication" didn't help his recovery efforts.

According to Rob Weiss, founding director of Los Angeles, California's Sexual Recovery Institute: "Five years ago, I had a pornographer come in and he came to the conclusion after six months of treatment that he had to find a new job. My thought with Duchovny is that if I were a sex addict and I were in treatment, I would not be able to continue doing this series. Being that character is antithetical to recovery."
